The origin recognition complex subunit 3 pseudogene (ENSG00000261725) is a non-functional genomic sequence similar to the gene encoding ORC3, a critical subunit of the origin recognition complex responsible for the initiation of DNA replication in eukaryotic cells. While the functional ORC3 gene is integral to cell cycle progression, DNA replication, and possibly neural development, the pseudogene variant does not encode a functional protein and does not participate in these biological processes. Pseudogenes such as this arise from duplication or retrotransposition events but lack the full ability to produce active gene products. There is no evidence that this pseudogene itself functions as a therapeutic target, or that it interacts with drugs, serves as a biomarker, or raises safety concerns. In plant models, apomixis-linked ORC3-like pseudogenes have been reported to affect gene regulation and silencing, but this is not established in humans.
