Oropharyngeal lymphoid tissue, most notably organized as Waldeyer's ring, is a collection of lymphatic tissue located at the entrance of the upper aerodigestive tract. It comprises the palatine, pharyngeal (adenoid), lingual, and tubal tonsils, serving as a primary site for mucosal immune surveillance against inhaled and ingested pathogens (StatPearls, NBK541073). This tissue facilitates the encounter between antigens and immune cells, such as B and T lymphocytes, to initiate systemic and local immune responses (PubMed, 11544358). Within these tissues, specialized microenvironments like germinal centers allow for the maturation of B cells and the production of secretory IgA. Therapeutic strategies involving this tissue typically focus on surgical removal or the treatment of specific infections and cancers using systemic agents.
