In pathogenic contexts like oral biofilms or opportunistic infections (e.g., Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis), MVs from these membranes promote bacterial survival by neutralizing antibiotics, phages, and enabling DNA transfer or surface remodeling under stress[1][2]. While not a specific therapeutic target like a receptor or enzyme, these membranes indirectly influence disease by harboring resistance mechanisms and triggering host inflammation via LPS exposure[1][2]. Drug interactions typically target cell wall synthesis upstream (e.g., beta-lactams) rather than the membrane itself, with vesicles potentially sequestering antibiotics to sustain chronic infections[2].
