Overview

Oropharyngeal mucosa refers to the epithelial lining tissue of the oropharynx, the middle part of the pharynx positioned behind the oral cavity, extending from the soft palate to the upper border of the epiglottis[1][3]. This mucosa is composed mainly of stratified squamous epithelium with underlying connective tissue, and it serves as a key physical and immunological barrier protecting deeper tissues from mechanical trauma, pathogens, and toxins encountered during breathing, swallowing, and speech[2][6]. The mucosa contains minor salivary glands for lubrication and harbors immune cells for local host defense[2]. While not a molecular or cellular drug target, its integrity and health are crucial for normal oropharyngeal function and it may be affected in infections, inflammation, and cancers[2][6]. Some drugs, such as topical anesthetics and antifungals, act on or within this tissue to manage local symptoms and diseases. Disruption of the oropharyngeal mucosa may result from trauma, infection, allergic reactions, cancer, or medical treatments (chemotherapy/radiation), leading to clinical complications such as mucositis, infection, ulceration, and impaired barrier function[2][4][6].
