Osmoregulation pathway

Overview

Osmoregulation is the physiological process by which organisms regulate the osmotic pressure of their internal fluids, maintaining balance between water and electrolytes across cell membranes and tissue fluids. This process is critical for cell integrity, metabolic stability, and overall homeostasis. In mammals, osmoregulation is primarily regulated by the kidneys, which modulate fluid reabsorption and excretion in response to intake and hormonal signals such as antidiuretic hormone (ADH/vasopressin), aldosterone, angiotensin II, and atrial natriuretic peptide. These hormones help maintain appropriate blood volume, blood pressure, and ionic composition, ensuring that toxic wastes are excreted and harmful accumulation of solutes or water does not occur[1][3][6]. Disruption of osmoregulatory pathways can lead to disorders such as dehydration, edema, and electrolyte imbalances[1][5][7].
