Osmotic Activity

01

Overview

Osmotic activity refers to the passive process by which water diffuses across a cell membrane in response to a concentration gradient. This process is fundamental to osmosis, where water moves from an area of lower solute concentration (higher water potential) to an area of higher solute concentration (lower water potential) through a semipermeable membrane. The driving force behind osmotic activity is the difference in solute concentrations on either side of the membrane, leading to net movement of solvent molecules until equilibrium is reached. It is important for physiological processes, such as maintaining cell turgor pressure, regulating fluid balance in tissues, and facilitating nutrient and waste transport across cellular membranes.

Mechanism of action

Osmotic activity is a physical process, not directly targeted by drugs. However, drugs such as diuretics influence osmotic gradients and water balance.
