Osmotic activity in the colon refers to the movement of water across the colonic epithelium, primarily driven by osmotic gradients established by solute (mainly electrolyte) absorption and secretion. This process is fundamental for maintaining fluid balance, stool consistency, and overall colonic function. Key molecular components regulating it include sodium channels/transporters, aquaporins (especially AQP3), and tight junction proteins.
Osmotic laxatives increase intraluminal osmolarity, drawing more fluid into bowel contents and promoting defecation. Stimulant laxatives can alter aquaporin expression via prostaglandin E₂ signaling.
