Osmotic effect on bowel contents refers to the physiological process where non-absorbable or poorly absorbed solutes create an osmotic pressure gradient that draws water into the intestinal lumen (StatPearls, 2023). This is not a traditional molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme, but rather a physical-chemical interaction within the gastrointestinal tract (PubMed, 2021). The accumulation of fluid increases the volume and softens the consistency of the stool, which distends the intestinal wall and triggers peristaltic movements (NIH, 2022). This mechanism is utilized by osmotic laxatives, including saline agents and certain carbohydrates, to treat constipation and provide bowel cleansing for diagnostic procedures (DrugBank, 2024). Therapeutic challenges associated with this effect include the risk of systemic electrolyte disturbances and dehydration, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly or those with renal insufficiency (PubMed, 2020).
Osmotic agents are poorly absorbed solutes that remain in the intestinal lumen, creating a hypertonic environment that draws water across the intestinal mucosa via osmosis to increase stool volume and stimulate peristalsis (StatPearls, 2023).
