Osmotic Effect on Colon (for Sorbitol)

Molecular classification
Physiological Process, Osmosis
01

Overview

The osmotic effect on the colon (for sorbitol) refers to the physiological process by which sorbitol, due to its poor absorption in the intestines, increases the osmolality of the colonic lumen. This increased osmolality draws water into the colon, softening stools and potentially leading to diarrhea. This effect is dose-dependent and influenced by individual factors such as gut microbiota composition. While used therapeutically as a laxative, excessive sorbitol intake can cause unwanted gastrointestinal side effects.
