An osmotic gradient is the difference in solute concentration across a semipermeable membrane, which drives the movement of water through osmosis. This gradient exists when one side of a membrane has a higher concentration of dissolved particles (solutes) than the other. Water moves from the region with lower solute concentration (higher water potential) to the region with higher solute concentration (lower water potential), aiming to equalize concentrations on both sides. While not a target itself, it influences molecular behavior and can be manipulated in drug delivery and therapies.
