Overview

The osmotic gradient at the ocular surface refers to the difference in osmolarity between the tear film and the underlying ocular surface epithelial cells. This gradient regulates water movement, maintains cell integrity, and supports normal vision. Disruption, especially increased tear film osmolarity (hyperosmolarity), is a key factor in dry eye disease pathogenesis.

Mechanism of action

Hypo-osmotic eye drops dilute hyperosmolar tears to reduce cellular stress and inflammation. Anti-inflammatory therapies target cytokine and MMP cascades activated by hyperosmotic stress.
