Osteoblast

Molecular classification
Cell type, Mesenchymal stem cell derivative
01

Overview

Osteoblasts are specialized, mononuclear cells responsible for the synthesis and mineralization of bone during both initial bone formation and later bone remodeling. They originate from mesenchymal stem cells and differentiate in the periosteum and endosteum. Their primary functions include synthesizing the organic components of bone matrix (primarily type I collagen), initiating mineralization by secreting enzymes like alkaline phosphatase, and regulating the local microenvironment by producing growth factors and hormones. After completing their role, osteoblasts can become osteocytes, undergo apoptosis, or become quiescent lining cells. Disruptions in osteoblast function can lead to diseases like osteoporosis and impaired fracture healing.
