Overview

Large multinucleated cell responsible for the breakdown (resorption) of bone tissue. This process is essential for bone maintenance, repair, and remodeling throughout life. Osteoclasts dissolve old or damaged bone by secreting acids and enzymes, which degrade both the mineral and organic components of bone. Bone resorption by osteoclasts releases calcium and phosphorus into the bloodstream, helping regulate blood calcium levels.
