Overview

Osteoclast precursor cell differentiation refers to the process by which mononuclear precursor cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage mature into multinucleated osteoclasts, the primary bone-resorbing cells. This process is tightly regulated by a network of cytokines, growth factors, and signaling pathways. Understanding this pathway has enabled development of anti-resorptive therapies targeting either M-CSF/c-Fms or RANK/RANKL interactions in conditions like osteoporosis or metastatic bone disease.
