Osteogenic precursor cells are stem or progenitor cells of mesenchymal origin with a high capacity for self-renewal and the ability to differentiate into osteoblasts, the bone-forming cell lineage. These cells are found primarily in bone marrow and periosteum, but can also occur as circulating osteogenic precursors (COP cells) in peripheral blood. Osteogenic precursor cells play a central role in bone development, growth, fracture healing, and maintenance of skeletal integrity. While they are the source of osteoblasts and bone tissue, they themselves are not direct therapeutic drug targets in the conventional sense, though modulating their function is a focus of regenerative medicine and some bone disease treatment strategies.
