01

Overview

Osteoinductivity is the property by which a biomaterial or molecule is able to recruit immature precursor cells and induce them to differentiate into osteoblasts, the cells responsible for forming new bone. This concept is fundamental in the design of bone grafts and regenerative scaffolds, as it defines their clinical potential to repair bone defects—especially those too large to heal naturally. Common osteoinductive agents include bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) such as BMP-2 and BMP-7, which are frequently used in bone tissue engineering. Materials with strong osteoinductive properties are crucial for effective bone healing and integration with existing bone structures. Notable challenges include immune reactions, clinical translation from animal models, and technical limitations in biomaterial manufacturing.
