Osteoprotegerin (OPG)

Target
OPG
Molecular classification
Secreted glycoprotein, Tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, Receptor
01

Overview

Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a secreted glycoprotein and a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily that acts as a soluble decoy receptor for RANKL. By sequestering RANKL, OPG prevents RANKL from binding to RANK on osteoclast precursors and mature osteoclasts, thus inhibiting osteoclast differentiation, activation, and survival. OPG plays a central role in bone metabolism by regulating the balance between bone resorption and formation, making it a key therapeutic target for osteoporosis and other bone disorders.
