Other extracellular matrix mRNAs refers to a diverse and heterogeneous group of messenger RNA transcripts that encode various proteins of the extracellular matrix (ECM) which are not classified into specific major families like collagens or laminins within a particular dataset. The ECM is a complex, three-dimensional network of extracellular macromolecules, such as glycoproteins, enzymes, and proteoglycans, that provide essential structural scaffolding and biochemical signals to surrounding cells (Source: NIH, 2023). These mRNAs are critical for the synthesis of components that maintain tissue integrity and modulate cell behaviors such as migration and proliferation (Source: UniProt, 2024). Pathologically, the dysregulation of these transcripts is a hallmark of fibrotic diseases, where excessive ECM production leads to organ scarring, and oncology, where ECM remodeling facilitates tumor invasion and drug resistance (Source: PubMed, PMC7071958). Consequently, there are no drugs that target this entire group of mRNAs collectively, though individual transcripts within the set may be investigated for RNA-interference-based therapies.
