Overview

ODF2L (Outer dense fiber of sperm tails 2 like) is a protein-coding gene encoding a centriolar satellite protein implicated in the negative regulation of ciliogenesis, acting particularly at the initiation stage[3][5][4][1]. It localizes to centriolar satellites and the basal body of cilia, with dynamic redistribution during cilium formation—dissociating from satellites during ciliogenesis onset and reappearing afterward[1]. Overexpression of ODF2L suppresses cilia formation, while its knockdown promotes ciliogenesis, suggesting it functions as a suppressor of cilium assembly[3][1][5]. Some evidence suggests it may also participate in Golgi vesicle trafficking required for ciliogenesis[1]. There is no direct evidence supporting ODF2L as a classic drug target, receptor, or enzyme, although recent data suggest that loss of ODF2L can sensitize certain cancer cells to specific inhibitors, implying potential research relevance in cancer biology[7].
