Outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of *Helicobacter pylori* are a diverse group of β-barrel proteins embedded in the outer membrane. They are crucial for bacterial colonization, pathogenesis, adaptation to the gastric environment, and interaction with host cells. OMPs function as porins for nutrient uptake and adhesins that mediate attachment to gastric epithelial cells. Expression is controlled through gene conversion/duplication, phase variation and allelic variation leading to heterogeneity among clinical isolates. Persistent infection, facilitated by OMPs, is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and increased risk for gastric cancer.
