Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are small, spherical nanostructures naturally released from the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. They are composed of components derived from the bacterial outer membrane, including proteins, lipids, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), nucleic acids, and periplasmic contents. OMVs serve multiple roles for bacteria, including cell-to-cell communication, pathogenesis, horizontal gene transfer, biofilm formation, and protection against environmental threats. They also have significant immunomodulatory properties and are being investigated as vaccine platforms.
