Overview

Ovicidal agents represent a diverse functional class of chemical and pharmacological substances designed to destroy the eggs of parasites, particularly those of insects and mites. This term does not refer to a single molecular target or receptor but instead describes a therapeutic category with varied mechanisms of action [CDC, 2023]. Some agents, such as abametapir, act by inhibiting metalloproteinases that are critical for the physiological processes of egg development and larval hatching [FDA, 2020]. Other substances, like malathion or spinosad, target the nervous system of the developing embryo, leading to death before the egg can hatch [PubMed: 22441768]. Additionally, some ovicides work via physical mechanisms, such as benzyl alcohol, which asphyxiates the developing organism by blocking respiratory spiracles. These agents are primarily utilized in the clinical management of infestations such as pediculosis (head lice) and scabies to prevent re-infestation. Because the term refers to the functional outcome of drug action on an organism's life cycle stage rather than a specific protein, it is not a canonical biological target in the traditional sense [StatPearls, 2023].
