Ovo-like zinc finger 3 (OVOL3) is a member of the OVOL family of transcription factors, characterized by possessing a highly conserved tetrad of C2H2-type zinc finger motifs at its C-terminal region. It is predicted to function primarily as a DNA-binding transcription factor regulating gene expression during differentiation processes, especially in epithelial tissues, and may be involved in epidermal cell differentiation and development. OVOL3 is active in the nucleus and binds cis-regulatory regions of DNA to control transcription by RNA polymerase II. Its biological and disease associations are less well-characterized than some paralogs (OVOL1, OVOL2), but OVOL3 mRNA is upregulated in certain cancers, such as clear cell renal cell carcinoma, and may have value as a prognostic biomarker. OVOL3 is not currently considered a druggable therapeutic target, and there is no evidence for approved drugs directly modulating its activity.
