Ovulation

01

Overview

Ovulation is a physiological process in the female reproductive system where a mature egg (oocyte) is released from the dominant follicle of the ovary. This process is crucial for fertility and is regulated by hormonal changes, particularly follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and estrogen. The LH surge triggers the rupture of the dominant follicle, leading to the release of the oocyte. After ovulation, the remnants of the follicle form the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone to prepare the uterine lining for potential implantation. Anovulation, the absence of ovulation, can result from hormonal imbalances or other health conditions and leads to infertility. Ovulation can be induced by medications such as clomiphene, letrozole, and gonadotropins. Monitoring includes assessment of the LH surge and progesterone levels.
