Ovulation inhibition is the suppression or prevention of oocyte release from mature ovarian follicles. This is achieved by disrupting the hormonal signals regulating ovulation at the level of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, or ovaries. Pharmacological agents such as progestins and progesterone receptor antagonists are used to inhibit ovulation for contraception, management of gynecological disorders, and controlled ovarian stimulation in assisted reproductive technologies.
Inhibition of ovulation is achieved through disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, either by suppressing gonadotropin secretion (GnRH, LH, FSH) or by directly blocking ovarian processes required for follicular rupture and oocyte release. Progestins mimic progesterone's negative feedback or act directly on ovarian tissue. Progesterone receptor antagonists interfere with steroidal positive feedback at the hypothalamus or block progesterone-dependent processes in the ovary.
