Overview

Oxalate (ethanedioate) is a dicarboxylic acid dianion found in many plants and produced endogenously as a metabolic end-product in humans. While it plays roles in calcium homeostasis and detoxification in plants, it acts as an antinutrient in humans by binding to minerals like calcium, reducing their bioavailability. High levels of oxalate can lead to hyperoxaluria and increase the risk of kidney stone formation.
