Oxalate inhibitors are a class of molecules that interfere with the formation and deposition of calcium oxalate crystals, which are the primary component of most kidney stones. They function by directly inhibiting the nucleation, growth, and aggregation of calcium oxalate crystals. Some compounds also prevent interactions between calcium oxalate crystals and renal epithelial cells. These inhibitors represent an emerging therapeutic strategy for preventing recurrence or progression of kidney stones and reducing renal injury associated with hyperoxaluric states.
