Oxidative Enzyme-Mediated Orthoquinone Formation

Molecular classification
Biochemical process, Reactive intermediate
01

Overview

Oxidative enzyme-mediated orthoquinone formation refers to the enzymatic process by which ortho-quinones (*o*-quinones) are generated from catechols or hydroquinones. This transformation is catalyzed by various oxidative enzymes, including cytochrome P450s, tyrosinase, and peroxidases, as well as metal ions. The resulting *o*-quinones are highly reactive electrophilic species that can act as cytotoxic mediators due to their ability to modify cellular macromolecules and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS).
