OXER1 is a G protein-coupled receptor belonging to the seven transmembrane receptor G-protein coupled receptor 1 family. Deorphanized in 1993, it is primarily known as the specific receptor for the arachidonic acid metabolite 5-oxo-ETE, but also binds other eicosanoids like 5-HPETE and 5-HETE. Recent research indicates it also functions as a membrane androgen receptor. Upon activation, OXER1 enables G protein-coupled receptor activity, involved in adenylate cyclase-inhibiting signaling pathways. It mediates various cellular processes including cell migration, apoptosis, cell proliferation, and calcium movements. Signaling mechanisms involve G-protein coupling and interactions with membrane transmembrane helices. OXER1 has emerged as a potential therapeutic target for various conditions, including hormone-responsive conditions, with polyphenolic molecules identified as putative antagonists. It is expressed in various tissues and cell types and likely plays roles in inflammatory responses and other eicosanoid/androgen-mediated processes.
