Oxycodone

Molecular classification
Other (Small molecule drug; Opioid analgesic)
01

Overview

Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic, derived from thebaine, used for the management of moderate to severe pain when non-opioid alternatives are inadequate. It acts as a full agonist at mu-opioid receptors (primary pharmacological target) in the brain and spinal cord and exerts analgesic, sedative, anxiolytic, and antitussive effects. Oxycodone is highly addictive, with potential for misuse, dependence, and life-threatening respiratory depression. Its safety profile requires strict medical oversight, and it is commonly formulated as hydrochloride salt for oral administration, sometimes in combination with non-opioid analgesics such as acetaminophen or aspirin.
