Oxygen Radical Formation (None)

None
Molecular classification

01

Overview

Oxygen radical formation refers to the generation of highly reactive molecules containing oxygen with one or more unpaired electrons, commonly known as oxygen free radicals. These species are a subset of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which also include non-radical but highly reactive derivatives of oxygen. While oxygen radicals play roles in cell signaling and defense against pathogens, excessive accumulation can damage cellular components such as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids, leading to oxidative stress implicated in aging and various diseases.

Mechanism of action

Antioxidants scavenge or neutralize free radicals; SOD/catalase/glutathione peroxidase mimetics enhance the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes.
