Oxygen supplementation

Oxygen supplementation refers to the medical use of supplemental oxygen, most commonly for treating or preventing hypoxemia (low blood oxygen levels) in disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, asthma, heart failure, cystic fibrosis, sleep apnea, and trauma to the respiratory system. Oxygen supplementation is not a molecular or protein target, but rather a clinical intervention. Oxygen therapy is delivered using devices such as nasal cannula, face mask, or through mechanical ventilation, providing either short- or long-term benefit by correcting hypoxemia and improving tissue oxygenation. While it is life-saving when used appropriately, excessive oxygenation can lead to toxicity and other adverse outcomes.
