Oxygen transport proteins are specialized molecules that bind, carry, and release oxygen (O₂) to support aerobic respiration in living organisms. Their primary function is to facilitate the efficient movement of oxygen from respiratory organs (such as lungs or gills) to tissues where it is needed for cellular metabolism. The major types are Hemoglobin, Myoglobin and Hemocyanin. Hemoglobin transports oxygen in the blood of vertebrates. Myoglobin stores oxygen in muscle tissue. Hemocyanin transports oxygen in some invertebrates.
