Target intelligence / Profile preview

P-type Calcium Channel (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Voltage-gated calcium channel
01

Overview

P-type calcium channels are voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) primarily located in neurons within the central and peripheral nervous systems. They mediate calcium influx upon membrane depolarization, which is essential for neurotransmitter and hormone release at synaptic terminals. Mutations in the gene encoding the P-type calcium channel α1 subunit (CACNA1A) are linked to several neurological disorders. P-type channels are selectively blocked by ω-agatoxin IVA.

02

Mechanism of action

ω-agatoxin IVA selectively blocks P-type calcium channels, preventing calcium influx and subsequent neurotransmitter/hormone release.

05

Safety considerations

Non-selective calcium channel blockers can have broad effects due to the widespread distribution of calcium channels.Inhibition of P-type calcium channels may disrupt normal neuronal function and synaptic transmission.
