P2X purinoceptor 2 (P2X2) is a protein encoded by the *P2RX2* gene in humans. It belongs to the family of purinergic receptors for ATP and functions as a cation-conducting ligand-gated ion channel. Upon binding extracellular ATP, it mediates synaptic transmission between neurons and from neurons to smooth muscle. It is also involved in auditory neurotransmission, regulates sound transduction and auditory neurotransmission, influences outer hair cell electromotility, and modulates inner ear gap junctions and potassium recycling processes critical for hearing function.
