p53 consensus DNA response elements are specific DNA sequences located in the regulatory regions of certain genes. They function as binding sites for the tumor suppressor protein p53, which acts as a transcription factor. These response elements typically consist of two decameric sequences: RRRCWWGYYY (where R = A/G, Y = C/T, W = A/T), separated by 0–13 base pairs. When activated by cellular stress signals such as DNA damage, p53 binds as a tetramer to these sequences, leading to transcriptional activation or repression of genes involved in critical processes like cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and DNA repair. The organization and sequence of the response elements influence the specificity and strength of p53 binding, thus tuning the genetic response to cellular stress. Importantly, p53 consensus DNA response elements are not biological targets themselves (e.g., receptor or enzyme) but are regulatory DNA segments required for p53-mediated gene control. Note: "p53 consensus DNA response elements" is not properly a therapeutic target, receptor, or protein. It is a DNA motif; targets are typically proteins (like the p53 protein), not DNA sequences.
