Pajaroellobacter abortivus (P. abortivus)

Target
P. abortivus
01

Overview

Pajaroellobacter abortivus is a gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium belonging to the order Myxococcales. It is the causative agent of Epizootic Bovine Abortion (EBA), also known as Foothill Abortion, which primarily affects cattle in the coastal and sierra regions of the western United States. The bacterium is transmitted to pregnant cattle by the soft-bodied tick Ornithodoros coriaceus. Infection typically leads to late-term abortion or the birth of weak calves characterized by lymphadenopathy and granulomatous lesions. Because it is a whole organism (pathogen) rather than a specific protein, receptor, or enzyme, it is classified as a biological entity or infectious agent rather than a molecular therapeutic target. Management of the disease currently focuses on tick control, timing of exposure to develop natural immunity, and the use of experimental vaccines rather than specific molecular inhibitors.
