Target intelligence / Profile preview
The pancreas is a vital dual-function gland located in the abdominal cavity that performs both exocrine and endocrine roles (StatPearls, 2023). Its exocrine component synthesizes and secretes digestive enzymes, such as amylase, lipase, and proteases, into the duodenum to facilitate the breakdown of macronutrients (NIH, 2023). The endocrine component is comprised of the islets of Langerhans, which house specialized cells that produce essential hormones like insulin and glucagon to maintain systemic glucose homeostasis (PubMed, 2022). Because the pancreas is a complex organ consisting of diverse tissues and cell types, it is not classified as a single molecular target; rather, it contains numerous specific targets such as the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) (PubChem, 2023). Pathologies of the pancreas include diabetes mellitus, where hormone production or action is impaired, and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, which is characterized by high resistance to conventional therapies (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Pharmacological interventions typically focus on modulating specific receptors or replacing deficient enzymes and hormones within the organ to treat metabolic or digestive disorders.
Not applicable; the pancreas is an organ containing multiple distinct molecular targets rather than being a single therapeutic target itself.
