The pancreatic β-cell plasma membrane is the lipid bilayer enclosing β-cells within the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. It acts as a dynamic interface between the cell’s internal environment and the extracellular space, mediating hormone secretion (notably insulin) in response to metabolic and neural signals. The membrane contains diverse proteins critical for β-cell function, including voltage-gated ion channels, ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels, glucose transporters (GLUT), and cell adhesion molecules, all orchestrating the processes of glucose sensing, electrical activity, and exocytosis of insulin granules. Dysfunction or altered composition of these membrane constituents underlies key features of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes[3][4][7].
