The pancreatic autoantigen-specific peptide-MHC complex refers to a molecular structure formed when peptides derived from pancreatic autoantigens (such as insulin or other β-cell proteins) are presented on the surface of antigen-presenting cells (APCs) by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. These complexes play a central role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diabetes, particularly type 1 diabetes, by activating autoreactive T cells that target and destroy insulin-producing β-cells. Targeting these specific peptide-MHC interactions forms the basis for antigen-specific immunotherapies aimed at inducing tolerance or selectively suppressing pathogenic T cell responses without broad immunosuppression.
