Overview

Pancreatic beta cell autoreactive T lymphocytes are immune cells—primarily CD8⁺ and CD4⁺ T cells—that specifically recognize and attack antigens derived from pancreatic beta cells, leading to their destruction. In type 1 diabetes, these autoreactive T cells respond to islet autoantigens such as insulin, glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65), IA-2, and islet-specific glucose-6-phosphate catalytic subunit–related protein (IGRP), among others. The loss of beta cell mass and insulin production from autoimmune activity by these T cells ultimately results in insulin-dependent diabetes. They are not a single molecular entity or therapeutic target but rather a functional cell population defined by their pathogenic autoimmune activity.
