Target intelligence / Profile preview
Pancreatic beta cells and pancreatic progenitors are not individual molecular targets but rather specific cell populations within the endocrine pancreas. Pancreatic progenitors are multipotent cells capable of differentiating into various pancreatic lineages, including the hormone-producing endocrine cells, while beta cells are the specialized cells responsible for the synthesis, storage, and secretion of insulin in response to blood glucose levels. In the context of drug discovery and regenerative medicine, these cells are the focus of cell replacement therapies and regenerative strategies aimed at treating diabetes mellitus, where beta cell mass is either destroyed by autoimmune processes (Type 1) or becomes dysfunctional (Type 2). Because this entry describes a complex cellular system rather than a discrete protein, enzyme, or receptor, it does not fit the standard definition of a therapeutic molecular target. Research in this area often focuses on specific transcription factors like PDX1 or NGN3 to drive the maturation of these cells from stem cell sources.
Not applicable as this is a cell population rather than a molecular target; however, regenerative therapies aim to replace or regenerate these cells to restore insulin production.
