Pancreatic progenitor cell differentiation and proliferation factor-like protein is a broadly expressed protein-coding gene involved in cell differentiation, notably during pancreatic lineage specification. Although its name suggests a critical role in pancreatic progenitor formation and proliferative regulation, functional studies in human stem cell models and fetal pancreas tissue have shown that PPDPFL is dispensable for proper pancreas development. Its expression is widespread in both fetal and adult pancreatic cells and is regulated by generic endodermal transcription factors (FOXA1/2, SOX9) rather than pancreas-specific factors. In cancer biology, PPDPFL has been associated with increased tumor progression and poorer prognosis in several cancer types, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma, though its direct functional contribution is not established. No known drugs directly target this gene, and no established mechanisms of action or safety issues have been reported. PPDPFL may have value as a prognostic biomarker in selected cancers, but its relevance as a true therapeutic target is currently unproven.
