LukS-PV is the S subunit of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), a bicomponent pore-forming cytotoxin secreted by Staphylococcus aureus. It binds to receptors on human neutrophils, primarily C5aR1, initiating the formation of transmembrane pores with LukF-PV, leading to cell lysis or apoptosis. Beyond its role in pore formation, isolated LukS-PV can induce apoptosis in leukemia cells via multiple signaling pathways, showing potential as an antileukemia agent. It's associated with increased virulence in CA-MRSA infections.
Binds to host cell receptors (C5aR1, C5L2), initiates assembly with LukF-PV subunit, forms pores in cell membrane leading to lysis or apoptosis. Alone can induce apoptosis via multiple signaling pathways independent from pore formation.
