Pantothenic acid biosynthesis refers to the metabolic pathway by which organisms synthesize pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), a vital precursor for the production of coenzyme A (CoA). CoA is an essential cofactor involved in numerous biochemical reactions, including fatty acid metabolism, synthesis and degradation of phospholipids, operation of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and more. It is a target for antimicrobial drug development because humans lack this pathway but many pathogens require it for survival.
