Overview

Paracrine signaling is a form of cell-to-cell communication in which a cell produces and releases signaling molecules (paracrine factors) that act on nearby target cells, inducing changes in their behavior or function. It enables precise spatial control over cellular activities within tissues by restricting signal action to nearby responsive neighbors. It underlies many essential physiological processes including development, immune response modulation, neural activity coordination at synapses, tissue regeneration after injury—and its dysregulation can contribute to disease states such as cancer progression or diabetes pathogenesis due to altered local microenvironments.
