The paracrine system refers to a form of cell signaling where a cell secretes signaling molecules, known as paracrine factors, that act on nearby target cells within the local environment (StatPearls, 2023). Unlike endocrine signaling, which involves hormones traveling through the bloodstream to distant organs, paracrine signals diffuse through the interstitial fluid and are typically short-lived or rapidly degraded to ensure localized action (Nature Education, 2014). This system is fundamental for coordinating local physiological responses, such as inflammation, wound healing, and embryonic development. In many diseases, particularly cancer, paracrine signaling is hijacked; for example, tumor cells may secrete growth factors that stimulate nearby stromal cells or promote angiogenesis (Wikipedia, 2024). While the paracrine system itself is not a single therapeutic target, many drugs are designed to inhibit or activate specific molecular components within this system, such as growth factor receptors or cytokines.
