Overview
Parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5), formerly known as simian virus 5 (SV5), is a negative-sense, nonsegmented, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the family *Paramyxoviridae*. It is closely related to other paramyxoviruses such as mumps virus and human parainfluenza viruses types 2 and 4. PIV5 has been widely used as a viral vector in vaccine development for both human and veterinary applications due to its favorable safety profile, genomic stability, and ability to accommodate foreign genes.
