Paramagnetic contrast agents are substances used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance image contrast. They work by altering the magnetic properties of nearby water protons, primarily shortening the T1 relaxation time, which leads to brighter signals on T1-weighted images. These agents are crucial for improving the visualization and differentiation of internal body structures, aiding in the diagnosis of various conditions. Gadolinium-based contrast agents are the most common type, but manganese and iron-based agents are also used. A major safety concern is nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) in patients with severe kidney disease.
