01

Overview

Parasite cytoskeletal proteins are a diverse group of structural and regulatory molecules that form the dynamic framework essential for parasite survival, morphology, motility, host cell invasion, replication, and pathogenicity. These proteins include actin filaments, microtubules, intermediate filaments, molecular motors (such as myosins, dyneins, kinesins), and various associated or regulatory proteins. Many parasite-specific isoforms or novel cytoskeletal-associated proteins exist that are not found in hosts—these can be potential drug targets. Examples include paramyosin in helminths and apical complex proteins in Apicomplexans like Toxoplasma gondii. They are attractive targets for anti-parasitic drugs because they are often essential for viability and have unique sequences or structures compared to mammalian homologues. Disruption can impair key processes like motility or invasion without affecting host cells if specificity is achieved.
